Cabinet sets date for Iraq’s provincial elections

The Iraqi Cabinet

Baghdad – The Cabinet held its weekly regular meeting in Baghdad on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi.

The Cabinet decided that provincial elections will be held in Iraq on Saturday 22 December 2018

The Cabinet reveiwed preparations for parliamentary elections scheduled for 12 May 2018, and approved the establishment of a ministerial committee, reporting directly to the Prime Minister, to coordinate government support for Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).

The Cabinet also discussed the structure of Iraq’s Federal Border Authority and reviewed its mandate.

The Cabinet approved the construction of Baghdad Economic City.

The Cabinet voted to designate Basra Oil Company’s water injection scheme,  which  consists of oil pipelines, storage and a mechanism to inject water from the Gulf into oil reservoirs, as an investment project.

The Cabinet also voted to hand over the development of  Majnoon oil fields in southern Iraq  to state-owned Basra Oil Company.
