Cabinet refers report on electoral violations to Parliament and prosecuting authorities


The Cabinet held its weekly regular meeting in Baghdad on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi.

The Cabinet discussed the report submitted by the higher ministerial committee investigating electoral violations during the parliamentary elections on 12 May.

The Cabinet approved the findings and recommendations of the ministerial committee which included:

  • The undertaking of a partial manual recount of at least 5% of all polling stations across Iraq
  • The annulling of out-of-country and IDPs voting

The Cabinet directed the National Intelligence Service, the National Security Service and law enforcement agencies to take the necessary legal steps to pursue those suspected of being behind the serious breaches of both electoral and criminal laws.

The Cabinet also directed that senior staff at Iraq’s Independent Electoral Commission may not travel abroad without the prior consent of the Prime Minister.

The Cabinet voted to refer the ministerial report on electoral  violations to Parliament, the Public Prosecution Office and the Integrity Commission.

The Cabinet also discussed several other developments and reviewed a number of projects and draft laws.

The Cabinet voted to authorise the launch of the fourth licensing round for mobile phone companies.

The Cabinet approved the strategic framework for the development of Iraq’s information and technology sector.

The Cabinet agreed amendments to be submitted to Parliament to strengthen current legislation to speed up the return of Iraq’s money smuggled abroad.
