Meeting of Iraq’s Executive, Parliamentary and Judicial leaderships: summary of key announcements

Prime Minister Adil Abd Al-Mahdi attended a meeting at Al-Salam Palace in Baghdad with President of the Republic, Barham Salih, the Speaker of the Council of Representatives, Mr. Mohammed Al-Halboosii, and the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Fayek Zidan.

They discussed the political and security developments following the recent protests in Iraq, and the painful incidents that led to the martyrdom and injury of civilians and members of the security forces, and agreed to:

    • Establish a panel of independent Iraqi experts to develop a strategic programme to address the fundamental weaknesses in the state system, in the political, economic, financial, legislative and cultural fields.
    • Expediate the release of all those who were detained during recent protests and who have not been charged with criminal offences.
    • Ensure that the work of the Commission of Inquiry into cases of violence, excessive use of force and attacks on media outlets during recent protests, is independent and prevent any attempt to influence the conduct of the investigation or to withhold information.
    • Refer all cases of corruption to the competent courts, and for these cases to be adjudicated within a strict timeframe.
